Description of the Centennial College Program
The English Language Essentials (ELE) has been developed for those students with
limited language skills. It has been divided into two levels so that students may begin
at varying stages of language development.
English Language Essentials – Level One
This level is designed for students who have no English language knowledge. The
emphasis will be on listening and speaking, with a focus on pronunciation and
effective speech at the basic level.
English Language Essentials – Level Two
This level is designed for students who have some English language knowledge. All
four distinct areas of language will be emphasized with grammar being an integral
component and pronunciation reviewed.
The Approaches to English Language Learning (AELL) consists of three levels of
English language training (Stage One, Two and Three) based on the most current
methods of effective teaching and learning practices.
Each course consists of two courses – Reading/Writing and Speaking/Listening, plus
an elective course (in Stage Two and Three) one day a week. The language skills
areas are separated into two courses in order to provide intense focus on each skill
area at the students’ level. The Speaking/Listening course emphasizes effective, clear
communication.
Approaches to English Language Learning – Stage One
This first level of the AELL Program is for students who have English language
essentials. It builds on the student’s existing English language skills - enhancing
grammar, learning the meaning of English terminology and the language used in
everyday life.
Approaches to English Language Learning – Stage Two
The second level of the AELL Program is for students who have grasped the basics
of the Stage 1 level language skills. It will focus on refining all four language
components with an emphasis on natural conversations using correct grammar,
listening and understanding task-based instructions and appropriate responses.
Attention will be given to discussion of current issues, develop presentations and
write complete sentences with correct pronunciation. Canadian life and business
concepts will be an integral part.

post secondary or post graduate program Centennial College in Toronto, Canada or
who want to seek employment in a company that requires English language
proficiency. Students will continue to improve their speaking and listening, as well as
develop strong reading and writing skills. Canadian life and business concepts will be
an integral part.

Level Placement Assessment
In order to ensure that students’ learning needs are met, there will be a placement test
before the program starts. Students will be placed according to the results of the
placement test.
The Approaches to English Language Learning placement test is correlated to the three
levels. The placement test includes a ten minute speaking interview, a fifty minute
listening and reading component and a writing piece.
A student may be placed separately in the two skill area courses. For example, a
student could take Stage One Reading/Writing and Stage Two Speaking/Listening.
